4 gushingly cute looks created locally

Last week, we teamed up with a group of local boutiques that I’ve been shopping at since high school. Kismet OTR, a cute boutique offering clothing and accessories, is the latest addition to the I Luv That Store group. I’ve been shopping at Pangea, Kismet O’Bryonville and Toko Baru for a while now, so I was excited that another shop was joining the group. I reached out about working together and they agreed. So myself and my friend Amber headed over there for a photoshoot last Monday.

These are four fun outfits we put together with their dresses and accessories. I loved one of the dresses so much that I decided to take it home with me. But more on that later.

Also today I’m co-hosting the Let’s Make Today Fabulous link-up with Chanda from mschanda.com. The theme for the link-up is Spring florals, which is great because one of these looks is all about the Spring florals. Here she is in a lovely floral dress. She simply looks amazing. You can find more amazing photos of her and her style over on her Instagram.

Without further ado, the four amazingly fun looks we created at Kismet OTR.

1. Florals and funk

kismet

I jumped out of my comfort zone a bit with this look and enjoyed it. I generally don’t do rings or hats. I really have no idea why. Perhaps you always have to take that hat off and I figure why bother. Perhaps rings never call to me. However with this look, we just went for it.

kismet

I’m also in love with this statement necklace. All items (dress, purse, ring, bracelet, necklace, ring and sunglasses) in this look can be found at Kismet OTR.

2. The floral sundress

Everything about Amber’s look screams Spring! I honestly do not know if I like the dress or the shades better. Both are so playfully fun and girly! Also, if you pop over to our Instagram, you’ll find one of Amber mid-twirl. This dress has a fantastic spin-factor to it!

3. The orange and blue dress

This was the dress I took home with me. It’s hard to not want a dress that fits well, is comfortable and is affordable. I also must say that I love this dress with this necklace. I would not have thought to pair the two, but Amber spotted it and convinced me to try it. I just loved the way it looked!

All items pictured can also be found at Kismet OTR. That means dress, necklace, bracelet, earrings and sunglasses!

4. The maxi and shawl look

This look is a bit more risque. This is why I love featuring other women on the blog. They often come up with outfit ideas I’d never try. This is the perfect example.

Becki and White Whale

Welcome to Small Business Saturday! Female business owners rock! Female business owners in dresses rock even more! That is why we’ve decided to feature Becki, a long-time good friend who is delving into the business world alongside of her husband Jeremiah. The two of the are co-owners of White Whale Tattoo, a quality tattoo studio that specializes in custom design. Basically you come up with an concept and Jeremiah turns it into a work of art that gets to be a part of you for life.

In December, I featured Becki in My Closet, a weekly series looking at one woman’s personal style. In said hang out, we sat down on the couches of their apartment that sits above their studio and had a nice chat about careers, business and life.

white whale

Where does the name come from?

So White Whale is a reference to Moby Dick and that is Jeremiah’s absolute favorite story of all time. Favorite book … he loves Moby Dick so much. I think what really resonates with him about Moby Dick is the u-shaped journey. Basically like very similar to Jonah and the Whale, but also same themes in Moby Dick … basically having to go through the lowest point in your life in order to reach your destiny and what has been planned for it.

What made you decide to be a co-owner with Jeremiah? You have your own career in both the education and non-profit sector and could easily just stay there. What makes you want to join him in running the show?

Well I think initially, we met at work. A lot of people will say “I could never work with my husband or my wife. They would drive me crazy!” And we’re the opposite. We work really, really well together, so it made sense that we work together. I really enjoy the non-profit sector. I think I’ll volunteer in some capacity or maybe work part-time somewhere. But the dream has always been to work together again and basically just be our own boss. Who doesn’t want that? So Jeremiah has this talent … this incredible gift and it just made sense to open our own business.

And for you to have a role in that.

Yeah because I had all these ideas about how to make it more of a pleasant experience for people. You go into a tattoo shop, and they usually are kind of dark and dingy. They kind of feel cluttered or dirty. They shouldn’t because it’s a medical procedure. You should not have to wonder when the last time they dusted was. You want it to feel clean. So I think our idea for keeping it super simple is just we want people to come in and we want it to feel clean. But also like it’s sort of a … getting a tattoo is a rite of passage and it’s this cool experience to go through this rite of passage. It’s almost zen like how you would feel if you got a massage or did yoga. Clean, contemporary and not a lot of stuff going on. Just very focused on the art.

white whale

white whale

What kind of response have you gotten to that?

It’s been great. I’ve second-guessed myself a lot. Anywhere where I’ve designed anything or created any space, I always feel like I’m second-guessing myself and thinking “does this really look good? Is this how I really want the space to look?” I feel like emphatically no, it’s perfect. People have come in the door … it’s kind of funny because you see this space from the outside … you weren’t really sure where the door was and it looked kind of like a secret spot. But then people would come in and we like “woah oh my gosh! I had no idea the space would look like this inside! This is amazing!” It’s very similar to how we wanted people to feel. It’s very clean, crisp, comfortable and kind of zen.

Why Walnut Hills?

I’ve always felt a connection to this neighborhood. I’ve always really enjoyed Walnut Hills and everything it has to offer. The development that’s happening here is grassroots mixed with some developers. I really like that they’re taking abandoned buildings and turning them into spaces. It feels like we fit with this community.

What do you want the future to be for White Whale?

This is basically like our starting point. We’ve talked about starting other shops in the future but them having their own name, own vibe and own thing. They would still be tattoo shops but they would have their own unique vibe. We’ve talked about not even having them in Cincinnati. So maybe putting them in cities we would like to live in part-time. We’ve talked about New Orleans, which is our favorite city. We’ve talked about Seattle. We’ve talked about a bunch of different places where we could see ourselves opening another shop. We’re kind of bouncing back and forth between a couple places.

That sounds like the life man.

That would be wonderful. That’s far down the road or maybe not far down the road.

So what are some things you want to do with the space now? I know you’ve talked about having art opening maybe.

Part of the beauty of leaving it so simplistic is it lends itself to … with it being a tattoo shop, you can just fold up those tables and roll out those chairs. Tattoo stations are on wheels, so you can just get it out of there. So it just becomes this empty space that could be used for a yoga class on Sunday morning or a musical venue. An art opening. It could be used for a lot of different things. And ultimately, if we’re not using it for the time we’re tattooing, we want people to take advantage of the space.

white whale

How does it feel to be a female small business owner?

It’s great. I’ve got my partner, so I think it’s way less intimidating than if I tried to start something on my own. I think having somebody who is on your team. It’s like not a problem. We’re 50 50. And it’s funny because we met with our team of lawyers … they came up with our contractor’s licensing, agreement … all of that. They helped us come up with our waiver. Everything that we need to make sure everything was ready to go. And one of the things that they made us do is come up with a “what if you guys get divorced? You’re 50 50 owners. If it was 49 51, the 49 would have to sell. So if the relationship fails, what happens to the business?” We were like “oh, that’s never gonna happen! That’s a stupid question!” And our lawyers were like “no, we need to decide this now.” So we kind of made a joke out of the whole situation. So we said okay, we’re gonna do this thing called the coin-flip show-down, if this day ever comes in our life. Of course not, so we might as well make a mockery of it. So the coin-flip show-down is written into our business licensing. We would both have to show up dressed as Kenny Powers and we have to flip a coin. And if you don’t dress as Kenny Powers, you forfeit.

Why is While Whale the best place to get a tattoo?

White Whale is just a different shop. You walk into any tattoo shop and you will feel the difference. You can talk to anybody and anybody who has been tattooed by us will give you a similar story. So tattoo shops have this reputation for being like this elitist space where everybody’s covered in tattoos who works there and if you’re not covered, you’re lame. “We’re not gonna talk to you. You’re not worth our time. Like what do you want? You probably want some stupid, small tattoo. We’re not even going to give you the time of day.” It feels very judgmental. It’s hard to be in a space like that. People feel very uncomfortable going into a space where they feel like they’re going to be judged. Nobody wants that.

Yeah and then you’re missing out on this whole market of people.

Yeah so our shop is very welcoming. People come from totally different walks of life. People come in who are covered in tattoos already who want more and there are people who it’s their first time getting tattooed. We want everyone to feel comfortable and like they can ask questions. The last thing you want is to be in a space where you’re getting something permanent on your body and you don’t feel like you can ask a question or say “hey, can we change the placement? Can we move the stencil?” There’s this kind of air of judgement that happens there. Our customer service is just a really, really big part of what our shop is about. You come in and we offer you a beverage. You can take as long as you need deciding the placement. If you decide you don’t like what we’ve drawn up, we can totally re-do it. Everything is able to be changed. And Jeremiah is just really warm and welcoming guy. He’s also a phenomenal artist.

How did he get into tattooing?

Basically Jeremiah moved to Guatemala and he basically took a sabbatical. Jeremiah started doing volunteer work in a gang prison. He was teaching the guys English. The guards would actually lock him in and stand on the outside … they did not want to be in there. They were like “these men are dangerous. Good luck!” And Jeremiah is like “no, they’re great.” Anyhow, he talked with the guys and a lot of them were wanting to leave the gang life but could not because they had gang tattoos. So if we leave with gang tattoos, we’ll be killed. So Jeremiah had this idea “hey, you know what? I’m going to bring down the best tattoo artist in Cincinnati.” So a friend of his who had done some tattoo work for Jeremiah volunteered to do cover-up work free of charge. So he asked Jeremiah to sketch some stuff for the cover-ups. So all of a sudden you’re seeing gang tattoos covered up by beautiful works of art. The guys are just wowed. You were literally seeing lives transformed. So theh this friend asked if he wanted to apprentice under him, which is crazy because he had never taken an apprentice before. So this was seven years ago.

Malinda, one half of CincyClean

Yesterday I had the pleasure chatting with Malinda Williams, one half of the two women behind Cincy Clean. You know you’ve hit it off with someone when you feel like you could talk with them forever about everything from business to blogging to organization, etc. That is exactly what happened when we met up at the Coffee Emporium Friday. Malinda is one of Faith’s best friends (Small Business Saturday: Faith and the mobile spray tan and Coffee with Faith: local entrepreneur and comedian) and her business partner in Cincy Clean. Faith Mueller is someone I’ve featured several times on the blog. She runs two businesses: Cincy Clean and Cincy Spray Tan. Malinda’s role is mostly in customer service and social media management.

Faith (left) and Malinda (right)

The business was started a little over a year ago. Faith had hired a house cleaner and had a great experience. She felt like a cleaning business would be a successful idea she could get behind. Furthermore, several of Faith’s family members clean houses, so she was familiar with house cleaning. So she wrote up her business plan, which included a business partner. She and Malinda had been best friends since high school, so she offered the partnership. At the time, Malinda was between jobs. While the idea of starting her own business was scary, she just decided to go for it.

Cincy Clean is basically a user-friendly cleaning service. A person could book a cleaning from their phone or laptop directly on the Cincy Clean website. Malinda said that busy people are who they target. They want to be able to provide a service to make people’s lives easier. They hope that through technology, they can reach a new group of people who might not have hired cleaners in the past.

“We want people to go online, order a service and before they know it, their house is clean and they didn’t have to do anything other than click a few buttons,” she said. “Why wouldn’t people want to do that?”

The prices are reasonable. She compared it to paying a phone bill. A clean house is a necessity that people should want to pay for each month. The rates are based on how many bedrooms a house has and they also offer green cleaning at no extra charge.

“People always ask about the green cleaning. It’s very popular,” said Malinda.

Currently they have about 10 part-time house cleaners working for the business. They get as many as 80 bookings a month. Their goal in this next year is to double that number.

Overall, Malinda enjoys the flexibility that owning her own business gives her. She has a three-year-old son who she has 50/50 shared parenting of with his father. So during the times he is with his father, she works as much as she can. During the times when she has him, she can either choose not to work or work on things from home.

“I can fix my schedule to make my life revolve around him,” she said.

She said it feels both great and scary to be a female entrepreneur. She enjoys running a service-oriented business because initially, there was not a lot of start-up capital involved. She also feels like it’s important to offer people the best cleaning service possible.

Pink Slate and Small Business Saturday

The Internet is truly an amazing thing. Forty years ago, the details of Pink Slate would have looked a lot different. Co-owners Amber and Susan would have needed a storefront, shop hours and additional staff. However with the Internet, Pink Slate can be a clothing boutique without the brick and mortar of a traditional shop. Furthermore, the Internet can reach farther and wider than one boutique shop in a Midwestern city.

The story of Pink Slate started with a friendship formed by two women overseas. While Amber and Susan attended the same high school, they were not close friends. However five years later they found themselves in Germany together when Susan’s husband and Amber were stationed in the military together. They were outnumbered by all the men, so they formed a strong friendship in the barracks over bottles of wine and laughter. Little did they know that that friendship would define their future.

After they left Germany, the two remained incredibly close. Over the next few years both women experienced many hardships and life changes. And yet they continued to be each other’s supporters. This strong friendship was how Pink Slate was born.

Pink Slate is an online boutique for women of all shapes and sizes. Their vision is to promote self-love, confidence and positivity. It was incredibly important to Amber and Susan to own a business promoting positive self-esteem. In the past, both have struggled with weight loss and gain, and self-esteem issues.

“Our hope and dream is that the Pink Slate woman feels as amazing as she truly is when she puts on one of our pieces,” said Amber. “We want our customer to hold herself proudly and confidently, knowing that she is BEAUTIFUL.”

Running a small business is not easy, though. Both admit to finding that work-life balance to be a struggle. They both constantly have to remind themselves that faith and family take precedence over Pink Slate. While Susan worked in the fashion industry and Amber worked in the corporate world, starting a business was completely new to them. There were many things they had to learn from scratch.

However both women seem to absolutely love it. Through their online boutique, they have met countless other women. While they have a passion for fashion, they seem to have more of a passion for people and relationships. They have connected with many other female small business owners across the country. They have had opportunities to collaborate and cross-promote each other.

“There are women we haven’t even met yet, that live across the country, who we know that we could count on if we needed help, support, advice, or just to listen to,” said Amber. “We want to be the same for other women!”

The clothing in their shop is clothing that they feel like they would own. Rather than paying attention to fashion trends, they pay attention to what is trending on television, in culture, lifestyle and culture. The women who model the clothing are mostly friends or family members. In the beginning, Amber and Susan would model the clothing. They like to laugh looking back as both women said they prefer to stay behind the camera.

They also are always looking for ways to give back. They want to use their boutique as a vehicle to make the world a better place. In the past they’ve supported an angel tree program, the Sleeping Sound and have volunteered their time in various ministries.

Disclaimer: their website is down 12.12.15 to control inventory as the ladies have their shop set up at an event all day! We hope it’s a success and lots of women become life-long customers! In the mean time, you should just go to their Pinterest to check out more of their photos!

L’BAE Hair, Makeup and Apparel

DSC_0214

Pamela Carter-Pitts is a woman of many talents. I met her several weeks ago at the Contemporary Dance Theatre’s fall Performance and Time Arts show. She directed a fashion show that was a part of the act (which you can read about on Not Your Mom’s PTA) and we struck up a conversation before the show began. This woman does a lot! Her business L’BAE, standing for Living Blessed and Empowered, provides hair and makeup services, has it’s own cosmetics line and it’s own apparel line. When she’s not working for herself through L’BAE, she can be found working as a sign language interpreter, playing wife to her husband or mom to her five children. Oh, and she also hosts a weekly radio show called Living Life the L’BAE Way on 1050 WGRI. I actually had the privilege of going on her show last Wednesday to talk about A World of Dresses.

DSC_0118
Pamela and I at the radio station!

Pamela started her career as a cosmetologist in 1995. She started off working in various higher end salons, which was great to learn the business. However hair has always been a gift of her’s, so she was always able to build up a solid client base. She started getting deaf clients and thus decided to go back to school to become a sign language interpreter. She completed a bachelor’s program at Wright State and became nationally certified in 2010. Since then, she’s had many unique opportunities through interpreting. She’s had the privilege of working as an interpreter for Michelle and Barack Obama. She’s also worked with many government officials and gospel artists. Music, she said is her favorite. Thus, she ends up interpreting at all sorts of concerts.

“I love music and I love the stage,” she said.

In 2007, her daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Synovial Sarcoma that eats your organs. It swallowed her entire left kidney, so today she’s living with only her right one. However she’s cancer free and does not need dialysis. During this time, Pamela really sought out her Christian faith. That was where the idea of L’BAE, Living Blessed and Empowered, comes from. She said that during this time, she kept this sort of mantra with her. No matter what, she would get out of bed with the belief that she was blessed and empowered through her faith.

DSC_0218

“I’m living blessed and empowered because despite the hardships that I’ve gone through and you don’t even know my story,” she said. “That is why I’m living blessed and empowered. My God gives me the joy to keep going despite what may be going on in my life.”

DSC_0207

Pamela looks at all of what she does as an art form. From a young age graduating high school from the School for Creative and Performing Arts, she has always loved performance. So makeup, hair and clothing design all go hand-in-hand with her creative side. In fact, her slogan with L’BAE is “Where the concept of art and beauty create a new you!”

DSC_0217

DSC_0225

DSC_0226

DSC_0224

For Pamela, L’BAE is more than just her business. It’s a lifestyle brand. She’s all about promoting positive self-esteem and feels like her business is her tool in empowering everyone she meets through it.

So in 2011, she began brainstorming and putting her business plan together. She started figuring out how she wanted the makeup to look, what she wanted the t-shirt designs to look like and all the other fun things that go along with creating your own business. Now she has her own space on the West side of Cincinnati where she sees clients by appointment. She can also be found going out to various events such as the one I met her at. In the summers, she travels around with L’BAE. Her cosmetics line was even endorsed by Reggie Wells, Oprah Winfrey’s former makeup artist.

DSC_0201

DSC_0196

DSC_0200

Through L’BAE, she landed her radio show. Life is full of so many chance encounters that lead to amazing things. This was one of them. She was at a gospel concert and ran into one of the producers at 1050 WGRI. He had heard about L’BAE and was asking her all about it. The concept was one he found intriguing. Through several interactions, she read to him some of her poems and writings she had that inspired L’BAE. She didn’t think much of it, though. Then a few weeks later, he asked her to come read them on the station. This is how L’BAE Moments came about, a short two-minute radio segment with Pamela saying different inspirational things. From this, the radio show was born just about two months ago. It has blown up, she said.

DSC_0210

Overall, Pamela seems to have a sense of joy and gratitude. She feels blessed with all of her successes.

“I love being my own boss and entrepreneur to where I dictate what happens in my own profession,” she said. “I love that. It feels really good.”

Megan and custom dress hangers

DSC_0114

It all started with her own wedding several years ago. Megan Knapke was marrying her college sweetheart and was doing all sorts of DIY stuff for decorations and other things. She stumbled upon customized dress hangers, but didn’t have the time to make one for herself. However she liked the idea and kept it with her.

Hangers

As time went on, other friends of hers got married and she started making hangers as wedding shower gifts. Everyone loved them. The idea is simple and yet so very personal. She simply took a wooden hanger, some wire, a flower and heavy-duty glue, and created something very special. The wire gets fashioned into the bride’s new name such as “Mrs. Jones” and the date of the wedding. This simple touch looks great in photos and gives the bride something special to hang her dress up with post-wedding as well.

DSC_0104

This popularity led her to where she is today. She now has her own Etsy store called Hang it Up Hangers and makes about 15-20 customized hangers a month for people all across the country. In addition to making hangers for brides, she also makes smaller hangers for children. While a majority of business is for brides, she will make a hanger for any occasion. For example, she has made a hangers for a graduation, someone’s mom and cheerleading.

il_570xN.826678975_rnr4

For Megan, the best thing is the freedom that comes with running her own business.

“It gives me the ability to do what I want when I want,” she said.

In some ways, Megan admits to being traditional when it comes to a family. She would love to be able to stay home with her future children but would still love to work while doing it. This work-from-home business gives her that freedom and flexibility. She also likes to joke with her husband who majored in entrepreneurship about how she’s the first to start her own business.

Through talking with Megan, it was evident how empowering owning a business is to her. She’s able to have ownership over something in a positive way, which she loves. Over the years, she admits she’s struggled to feel like she’s really good at something. I know this feeling well, and I feel like so many other women do. We are often our own worst critics. These hangers, however, take a great deal of detail work and practice. Not everyone is as crafty or talented as Megan. This business has really helped her to see her own talents and skills as they are.

Looking forward, Megan will be a part of a bridal show in January, something she is excited about. Also, each quarter she sends a portion of her profits to a non-profit doing great work. Last quarter, the portion went to Determined to Develop, an organization in Malawi that a friend of her’s started. She loves the ability she has to give back.

The hangers range from $16-$30 depending on size and whether you have one line of writing or two. Check out her Etsy store here.

Small Business Saturday: Amy and Ayurveda

DSC_0172One of my favorite things about Amy is her calming presence. I’ve known Amy for about four years now, and she makes you feel so at ease in her presence. Like you could tell her anything, free of judgement or embarrassment. This sort of intimacy she builds with those in her life make her great at her work, which is Ayurveda. In Cincinnati, Amy runs her own Ayurvedic practice called Dosha Know.

Ayurveda is an ancient form of holistic healing, originating from Tibet/India region in the Himalayan Mountains. It is said to be the most ancient form of medicine. It’s at least 5-10,000 years old. A group of rishis (meditators) in the Himalayas sort of founded Ayurveda together through their visions. They realized in their attempts to reach Nirvana in their meditations that their success was only as strong as their body. They thus began to then ask themselves how to reach optimal health. Through their meditations, they began to get amazing insight on how the human body worked. All of these insights have actually checked out with modern-day science.

“If you think about it, it’s quite amazing,” said Amy. “They could see the insides of the human body through their meditations without any labs, without any equipment and without anything, because it didn’t exist yet.”

Many of the texts of Ayurveda were burnt and lost during the time that the French and British controlled India. To them, Ayurveda was threatening. However Ayurveda was still kept alive orally. Once India re-gained it’s freedom, Ayurveda came back to life.

Amy discovered Ayurveda during her time spent in California. Amy left her hometown of Cincinnati when she was 18 to attend college at the University of Southern California and ended up spending about 5-6 years out there. During her time out West, she became interested in all sorts of holistic things such as yoga and meditation. While she got a degree in film, she knew she probably would not pursue that as a career and thus was looking elsewhere. Instead of obsessing about figuring out exactly what she was to do, she found the American University of Complementary Medicine through a google search, and set up an appointment with an advisor there. He suggested she look into Ayurveda. This was back in 2007, so Ayurveda was very much un-heard of in the Western world. It intrigued her because it touches on everything from yoga to psychology to nutrition and more.

“It seemed like a practice that would draw on all of my strengths and it wouldn’t confine me to just doing one thing,” she said. “So I decided to go for it and I studied for several years.”

DSC_0166

Amy studied at AUCM for three years and earned two certificates, one in Ayurvedic Medicine and one is Advanced Ayurvedic Medicine. She’s also Reiki level one and two certified. A majority of her training was spent working with clients, which is where you best learn, she says.

“I’ve always been really grateful for my mentor for pushing me to actually work with actual human bodies,” she said. “That made me feel more equipped to go out and actually do this.”

Now spends her time seeing clients in the Cincinnati area in her College Hill space and teaching others interested in Ayurveda. Many in the Midwest have an interest in Ayurveda but no program for them to learn like Amy had in California. So she’s looking to starting one here. She hopes to create a certificate program like the one she studied with in California.

A lot of her job is taking Ayurveda, which is an ancient form of medicine coming from an Eastern culture far different than the United States, and making it relevant for Americans in 2015. Starting off, this is what she first goes over with her clients during their first meeting. Often times, that means translating Ayurvedic texts to make them relatable and workable in our culture.

“The beautiful thing about Ayurveda is that it speaks in essences,” she said. “It doesn’t speak in absolutes. It gives you essences, which is cool because you can take the essence of what the text book is trying to tell you and it’s very translatable. You just have to put everything in context all the time.”

Defining it in literal terms has been hard at times. Over the years, she’s developed a handbook that she goes over with her first time clients, because her first appointment with a client is the most important. The more trust she can gain, the more the client will open up about what they are dealing with and the easier it will be for the two of them to work towards a long-term solution.

After this initial meeting, the next meeting is the Ayurvedic evaluation, which has several facets including a psychological evaluation, a pulse examination and other similar things. Often times, the body will resist because the body naturally protects itself, she said. Often, conditions exist because they are protecting the body. This can be challenging and at first, this often means they simply treat the symptoms. However they treat the symptoms as they dig deeper to find the root of what is going on. Once they get to the bottom of it, they can start being aggressive in treatment.

DSC_0156

“We really do have to work with the body’s pace and we have to work with the psyche’s pace as well, because those two forces are working together,” she said. “They do what they do because they’re protecting the body. So it’s my job to read and understand the pace at which this body and this psyche is willing to be pushed.”

Bodywork and nutrition are places where she often starts. Nutrition, she says, is something that is always a good starting point because everyone benefits from good nutrition. Also, it can take a month or two to really see the positive affects of nutrition, so it’s best to start on it in the beginning. Ayurvedic nutrition focuses on proper digestion, first and foremost. So it’s more about how you eat than what you eat.

Amy finds her work to be incredibly rewarding. She loves helping people to heal and better their health. For example, she had a woman who was having trouble conceiving a child. Through their work together, she was able to successfully get pregnant. She wouldn’t trade these feelings of helping people for the world, she says. It makes her really want to spread the word.

“It’s the only health approach that I’ve seen that creates real long term results,” she said. “In Ayurvedic medicine, we don’t treat symptoms. We treat the disease and it’s a long process doing the detective work figuring out where the disease stems from. But for a client who is dedicated to their health and is willing to put in the time, it’s perfect.”

Small Business Saturday: Faith and the mobile spray tan

Last Monday, I jumped a bit out of my comfort zone. I got a spray tan and actually enjoyed the experience.

I’m a fair-skinned person who burns at least once a summer. I’ve never been to a tanning bed because of how awful they are for your skin. I just thought paying to damage my skin sounded rather … backwards? Spray tanning has become popular for just this reason. Faith Mueller, who we featured several weeks ago in Coffee with Faith: local entrepreneur and comedian, has decided to jump on this opportunity and start her own business called Cincy Spray Tan.

“It feels really good,” said Faith about starting her own business. “It’s something that I’ve always thought about and am really happy to do.”

In August, she started Cincy Spray Tan out of her home. Her business is totally mobile: she packs up all the spray tan equipment, travels to your home and gives you a spray tan in the comfort of your own abode. While there are other places you can go for a spray tan, Cincy Spray Tan is one of only two mobile spray tan businesses in the city.

The spray tan solution

“We’re becoming more and more a city of young professionals, so it’s a great place to start a business,” said Faith.

The spray tan solution simply reacts with your dead skin cells and never actually penetrates through the surface of your skin. Faith uses an eco-friendly brand of solution called Naked Sun which uses neat ingredients such as green coffee extract, strawberry and mango. Things like this assured the skeptic in me.

The lovely spray tan tent!

When I arrived at Faith’s house, everything was set up and ready to go. The entire set up could easily fit in a car trunk with some space to spare. First, there’s the spray tan tent in which the person stands in. The hose that actually sprays you is hooked up to this machine. You put the solution in the hose part at the top and it turns it to a sprayable tan. I’m not really sure what I was expecting, but I was very pleasantly surprised.

Next, I stripped. Okay, not completely. I changed into a strapless bra and my undies. I can see why doing it in your own home works for this aspect. It can be awkward to just strip down for a stranger. I snapped a few before photos:

I’m so pale!

The actual spray tan experience was quite nice. It felt like a mixture of a hairdryer and a squirt gun. At times, it was just a tad cold. In all, it took maybe five minutes at the most. I was told not to shower for eight hours, so getting sprayed down at 5:30 p.m. really worked out.

DSC_0013Here you can see the before/after difference. I took this right after getting sprayed down. I just looked a little tanner all week, but not like a pumpkin. Spray tans last 7-10 days. Someone who maintains a spray-tanned look is recommended to get one every 10 days.

Want to try a spray tan? Faith offers discounted prices for groups, which is perfect for a bridal party. If it’s just you, it’s $50 per visit. However the price goes down to $40 for 2-3 people, $35 for groups of 4-7 and $25 for groups of 7 or more. Also, with bridal parties of four or more, the bride gets her’s for free. Kind of the perfect gift for a bachelorette party! Also, you can get these prices if you buy in bulk. So if you’re a person who gets a spray tan regularly, buying them in bunches of 7 will save you 50% in the long run!

Want to learn more about Cincy Spray Tan? They’ll be at LA Fitness in Oakley (4700 Margburg Ave. Cincinnati, Ohio 45209) next Thursday, November 12th, from 4-8 p.m., offering half off spray tans. So if you want to try it but are not sure about spending $50 on something new and different, come out to LA Fitness. Also, they’re doing some giveaways. Every 50th person who signs up for their giveaway (you don’t even need to get a spray tan) gets a free spray tan.

Also, you should check out their Facebook and Instagram!

Small Business Saturday: Emma and the 360 Video

Emma in her Halloween costume with a 360 camera!
Emma in her Halloween costume with a 360 camera!

What if I told you that there are true 360 degree videos out there? All you do is view such video on your smart phone and with the simple touch of your fingers, you can literally turn in a 360 degree circle and view all the things that would normally be lost behind the cameraman. With the ability to move around, and look up and down, it feels as though you are actually there in the middle of the action. What if I also told you I know someone who makes said videos? Well I do! Meet Emma Mankey Hidem, owner of Experience360.

Emma’s story is about a big leap of faith. Prior to starting Experience360, she worked as a film maker. After studying film at NYU, she landed her first job working for a successful documentary film maker. Since then, she has always had a full-time job doing what she loves. However she was itching for more.

“If I didn’t make the leap, my side projects would be just that: SIDE projects,” Emma wrote in a blog post she published back in August about why she quit her job to chase after her dreams.

In her last full-time film job, she worked with a company that documented college football. This is where she initially became familiar with this style of video. They would put the camera in the middle of the field as the players rushed in. Having a 360 degree video in that setting provides the viewer with such a neat perspective. Emma felt like this was such a unique product that could really be viable. This was an opportunity she was really excited about, so she seized it!

emmaStarting out, it has been challenging to market the technology as it is new and many people do not know about it. It is a hard thing for people to understand and you can only experience it in full on the right device. When I first viewed one of her videos, I was on a desktop computer and very confused as to why things looked so odd. It was only when I switched to viewing the videos on my phone that I saw the technology for what it was. I was for sure impressed. The technology truly does sell itself, once you can fully experience it.

Through Experience360, she’s had some amazing experiences.

“Never did I think I would get to be a football field with 80,000 screaming fans as the team runs out,” remarked Emma.

Her favorite part, however, is the joy her work brings to others. People react very positively to the technology. They go nuts for it, in fact.

“I love giving people an experience that they wouldn’t be able to have in the real world,” she said.

She is very adamant about creating quality 360 degree videos. The most important factor in this is camera location. Some people are a bit more passive and put the camera off to the side. Not Emma. She described herself as fearless in regards to making sure the camera is placed in the center of the action, even if it might ruffle a few feathers. After all, you’ll really feel as though you’re there.

Emma is fearless both in camera placement and in her business in general. It takes a true badass woman to chase after her dreams.
