Online teaching jobs are the wave of the future. One of the ways I earn money each week is by teaching English. However the job doesn’t involve printing anything or going anywhere. Instead I simply log onto a website on my computer and teach classes over video calls. I love that it’s comfortable and that I can do it from anywhere.
I have been teaching English online for about a year and a half. It took me a bit to find the company that was right for me. The truth is, there are lots of companies with online teaching jobs. Each one is a little bit different than the other. I decided that instead of writing this entire post myself, I would interview people who work with different companies that offer online teaching jobs. Best of luck in finding that perfect online teaching job!
7 Companies with online teaching jobs
1. Verbling
We are going to start with the company that I work for. This is the only one of the seven where I interview myself.
What’s your name?
Nina! (the person who writes this blog).
Where are you from and where do you currently live?
I’m from Cincinnati, Ohio in the United States and I currently live in Nájera, Spain.
Why did you decide to teach online?
I love the idea of making money from my laptop (obviously with this blog). Since I already work as an English teacher, I thought online teaching could be another way to earn some extra money. I like the flexibility that it provides.
How did you find out about Verbling?
A friend of mine recommended them to me. She said she initially found her Spanish teacher on there and then thought “I wonder if I could teach English on there?”
Tell me a little bit about the hiring process. What would an interested candidate have to do? How rigorous is the hiring process?
There is no official interview. Candidates have to fill out an application and create a video where they introduce themselves. They are encouraged to talk about their teaching experience and teaching style. If they can speak other languages, they are encouraged to speak them in this video. Verbling does not accept all candidates, so my advice to everyone is to fill out your application as best as you can and really make a good video. Having certificates like TEFL or CELTA are nice pluses but not required. I don’t have any and I got accepted. They seem to like teachers who can speak another language (which is a big reason I feel like they accepted me). They say on their website that they will only let you know if you got accepted and should let you know within two weeks.
I should also note that you can only teach your native language on there. So even though I speak fluent Spanish, I could never teach it on there. This does disqualify non-native teachers with a native level. The good news is that you can learn all sorts of languages on Verbling, so you can probably teach whatever native language is yours on there!
Are the lessons prepared for you or do you have to create them?
You prepare the lessons! Typically when I get a new student, I message them to ask them what they want to work on. I have a trial class template that I use that is basically a slideshow document with conversation questions and a reading passage. On their platform, they have a space where you can upload documents. You and your student can view them at the same time, write on them and even draw on them (one of my child students loves that feature).
I find that I don’t spend as much time as people think planning. Check out my Ultimate ESL Guide if you need help finding resources and materials for English classes.
Roughly how long did it take you to get students?
This one did take me some time. I did get a student maybe a week after I signed up, but she only wanted a few classes. Over my first 6-8 months, I had students here and there, but nothing regular. I also had less of an open schedule since I was teaching private lessons and working at two schools in Granada.
In August, I had a very open schedule and started getting tons of students. I now have probably eight regular students and teach 5-10 classes each week. Your Verbling profile shows how many classes you’ve taught and reviews that students leave for you. It did take me a bit to build that up. However I’m pretty content with where I am now and the regular students that I have. Verbling will take some patience at first.
What is the starting off pay?
Your pay rates are totally up to you! This is one of the things that I love about this platform. I price my classes around what I price my private lessons in Spain, taking into account my experience. You can also offer discounts if students buy classes in packages. So I have a rate for just buying one and a slightly lower rate if they buy a package of five or more.
Are you required to work a specific amount of hours each week?
Nope! You have complete autonomy over your schedule! You set your general availability on your dashboard, but are only required to teach when a student reserves a class with you. You can mark yourself as unavailable if something comes up. You can also request a reschedule with a student if it’s in advance. I am traveling next weekend Saturday to Monday, so I have marked myself as unavailable the entire weekend. I love the flexibility that we are given!
Is there a peak time for teaching the most classes? If so, when is it?
I really don’t think so. The Verbling platform is a place where anyone living almost anywhere in the world can find a native teacher in the language that they want to learn. I have students living in South Korea, Denmark, The Netherlands, Spain, The United States and Taiwan. You will get the students looking for what you’re offering. I get children because I have experience with kids. I get Hispanic people because they see that I speak Spanish.
What are the best things about the company you work for?
I love the autonomy we are given on Verbling. It basically feels like each tutor runs their own tutoring business. If you are a good teacher and have value to offer, you will get students. I also love how flexible it is in regards to my schedule. If I plan a trip, the first thing I do is log onto Verbling and mark myself as unavailable for those dates.
What are the worst things?
It does suck that it takes some time to build up your student base. Also sometimes you experience connection difficulties, but that probably happens with most online teaching jobs.

2. English Ninjas
This was the first online teaching company that I worked for. My experience with them wasn’t amazing, so I moved on and started looking for other online teaching jobs. I soon found Verbling. However a friend of mine has continued with them and shares her experience here.
What’s your name?
I’m Shola.
Where are you from and where do you currently live?
I’m from the USA, and I’ve been living in Spain for 2 years now.
Why did you decide to teach online?
I was broke, y’all. The Auxiliares program (the program that her and I work with to teach English in Spain) pays enough to cover living expenses, but I wanted more dough to afford travel, etc. Teaching English online is simply the most convenient and easiest way to earn money. I don’t spend any time or money to commute to work. I don’t have to plan lessons or manage a class of multiple students. I can spend more time alone at home (perfect for an introvert like me), earn money, and still maintain energy for being with friends.
How did you find out about the company?
I heard it through the auxiliares grapevine.
Tell me a little bit about the hiring process. What would an interested candidate have to do? How rigorous is the hiring process?
I applied for English Ninjas in the beginning of 2017 when it was still fairly new, so I doubt the process is the same now. I simply emailed my CV to the owner, had a quick 4 minute chat with her on WhatsApp, then completed a 30 minute training chat with another teacher, and started working. The company has improved a lot of its functions since then.
Are the lessons prepared for you or do you have to create them?
I don’t prepare any lessons for English Ninjas, since the majority of students want to practice conversation. Sometimes they want to practice specific grammar points, phrasal verbs, or idioms. Others want to practice conversations specific to their business or industry. The platform has links to articles for reading practice, but I rarely use them. The platform also has some docs with business specific dialogues and comprehension questions, which I sometimes use if students request it. I mainly just speak with students and quickly google grammar exercises if they so request. We go through the exercises together, I correct them, and I offer explanations when needed.
Roughly how long did it take you to get students?
I immediately had students. English Ninjas students choose which tutors they call. After some time, you develop working relationships with regulars.
What is the starting off pay?
English Ninjas pays a standard $10 per hour, which doesn’t take into account your experience, education, etc. After working with the company for a year and being one of the longest working tutors on the site, I asked English Ninjas for a raise. They declined, but said they appreciate all my work.
Are you required to work a specific amount of hours each week?
Yes. English Ninjas suggests in their manual that tutors work a minimum of 12 hours weekly. On the screen where you enter your weekly schedule, however, there is a reminder to book at least 9 hours. At times, when I was travelling, I left an entire week empty. Nothing happened, and I resumed working after my trip.
Is there a peak time for teaching the most classes? If so, when is it?
Yes. Peak hours for English Ninjas are roughly between 6pm to midnight GMT+3, because the majority of the students are teens and adults in Turkey. There are, however, students who call from all over the world. I’ve talked with students from Russia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Brazil, Colombia, and the USA. So, you really could work anytime.
What are the best things about the company you work for?
By far, the absolute best thing about teaching online, and teaching in general, is the opportunity to connect to other humans and help them improve their lives. People around the world are studying my native language to enhance their chances of studying at the university level, obtaining higher level jobs, and ultimately providing for themselves and their families. It’s an honor to be a part of that.
With English Ninjas, the flexibility of work hours is a huge plus. I choose my hours each week, so I can change according to any upcoming plans I might have. Also, I can log on anytime I am available (even if not scheduled), and random students can call. Regular students always look for my availability each Sunday when the schedule opens for the coming week, and they reserve sessions. Many of my friends quit working for English Ninjas due to the low pay, which I totally understand. I continue working for them, since it’s an easy way to earn a little extra money each month. Some friends have informed me of similar platforms such as Cambly and Verbling, but I just don’t want to have to establish regular students again.
What are the worst things?
The worst thing is the low pay.
Is there anything else people should be aware of before applying?
English Ninjas pays once monthly during the first 5 days of the month to Paypal in USD$. When I first started back in 2017, payment often arrived late. During the last 7 months or so, pay has always arrived on time.

3. EF
What’s your name?
Heather Berg
Where are you from and where do you currently live?
I’m from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, but I currently live in Ponferrada, Spain. I’m here for the school year as a classroom assistant for a primary school (1st-6th grades).
Why did you decide to teach online?
I’ve been teaching online since March of 2018 and I wanted something that would provide flexibility. I also wanted to continue to improve my intercultural communication skills as I hope to work in international education in the future.
Tell me about the company.
EnglishLive began in 1965. They’re the world’s largest online English school, and they are also well-known for their study abroad programs and university-level travel programs (spring break trips, European adventures, etc.)
What age group do you teach? Are your students from a specific country?
EF primarily teaches adults, but a program for younger students (18 years of age and younger) is in the works. I teach people anywhere from 18 to 70, and the majority of my students have been Chinese; however, I also have plenty of students from Russia, Japan, Brazil, and Spanish-speaking countries.
How did you find out about the company?
I was referred to EF by the friend of a friend. I mentioned to a close friend that I wanted something flexible where I could work from home until I found full-time work, and she mentioned that her friend worked for EF. I applied and received a contract within a week of the interview.
Tell me a little bit about the hiring process. What would an interested candidate have to do?
The nice thing about EF is that you don’t need previous teaching experience; however, you are required to have a 40-hour ESL certificate, which can easily be obtained online. You also need to be a university graduate or in the last year of university study.
How rigorous is the hiring process?
The process isn’t very rigorous, but I’m speaking as someone who did have quite a bit of former experience in teaching English or learning another language when I applied. That being said, I know plenty of people that did not study anything related to teaching English in college and were hired with EF.
Are the lessons prepared for you or do you have to create them?
The lessons are already prepared. You familiarize yourself with the content before class and teach the lesson. It’s quite straightforward and the students are wonderful. There are Group Lessons (a class with up to six students) and Private Lessons (one-on-one study). For the Private Lessons you can provide your own lesson or use the pre-created copyrighted content.
Roughly how long did it take you to get students?
It took me only a couple of weeks to start gaining return students. I met several students during Group Lessons, and other returning students during Private Lessons. If a student likes my teaching style and wants to book another class with me, they can find my name on the schedule each week or I can book a class for them during a time that works mutually for us.
What is the starting off pay?
In the United States, starting pay is $12.00 per hour. I recently switched to the Freelance Worldwide (FWW) server where starting pay is $10.00 per hour. FWW has more frequent pay raises, happening every three months instead of every six months.
Are you required to work a specific amount of hours each week?
You’re not required to teach a specific amount of hours; however, if you want to receive a pay increase/promotion, you should teach about 15 hours per week, or 360 hours in a 6-month period to receive the raise.
Is there a peak time for teaching the most classes? If so, when is it?
For the US Center, peak time is 7-10 AM and PM NYT and weekends. Weekends usually see a lot of traffic any time of day across the board. This is partially because there are so many students in China’s time zone that we cater to.
What are the best things about the company you work for?
It’s flexible and I received a lot of support from my mentor during my first 3 months. They usually host bi-weekly group meetings where a knowledgeable teacher or instructor fields questions with anyone who wants to attend. It’s a nice way to meet other teachers. This could be true of all online teaching sites (I’ve only taught with EF), but I’ve learned so much about other places thanks to the students I’ve met. I often say I learn as much as I teach.
What are the worst things?
The pay is a little less than one would hope, especially since a university degree is required, but the content is provided for you, and once you get into the swing of teaching online, it balances out. Also, students that don’t show up for class can cause problems for your class schedule/amount of hours each week. EF recently started compensating for Private Lesson students that cancel within a certain amount of time before class. Also, you get paid for the time you wait for a class to start, even if the student doesn’t show up.
Is there anything else people should be aware of before applying?
In addition to the aforementioned requirements, you must have access to a high-speed, stable internet connection that you can physically connect to with an ethernet cable.
Apply for online teaching jobs with EF. You can list Heather on your application as the person who referred you.
4. VIP Kid
What’s your name?
Hello, my name is Hannah!
Where are you from and where do you currently live?
I am from the USA and live in Spain.
Why did you decide to teach online?
I decided to teach online to supplement my income, as I am in the Auxiliares Program.
How did you find out about the company?
I found out about it through other Auxiliares.
Tell me a little bit about the hiring process. What would an interested candidate have to do?
First, you’d have to apply. That part is pretty quick. Then, you’d have to go through an interview process. You can chose to upload a demo of you teaching a class or having a live mock class with an actual teacher. I chose to do it live because I felt it was best to have someone at the other end. Depending on how you do in that first video, you’d have to do another mock class with someone or another demo video.
How rigorous is the hiring process?
People say it is pretty tedious and I was prepared for it. I practiced a lot and watched tons of youtube videos on it, and passed after my first mock class.
Are the lessons prepared for you or do you have to create them?
They are prepared for you!
Roughly how long did it take you to get students?
That is the rough part. It can take several months to get steady stream of people. I would say it took me a whole month or two to get gain stability but it really picked up after that.
What is the starting off pay?
I make about $20 an hour, or $10 per class.
Are you required to work a specific amount of hours each week?
No.
Is there a peak time for teaching the most classes? If so, when is it?
Yes, on weekdays 6-10PM Beijing time and weekends pretty much all day.
What are the best things about the company you work for?
I like that I can set my own schedule and that the lessons are prepared for me. I also like that, depending on your interview process, you can get selected to work with younger or older students. They selected me to work with older students and I love it.
What are the worst things?
They have a cancellation policy that I feel is stricter for us than for parents.
Is there anything else people should be aware of before applying?
I was hesitant to apply because I thought I needed to be jumping off the wall with energy to succeed. The truth is, you can actually be yourself. It may not be a good fit for every kid, but you will find those who like your energy, as long as you are a good teacher.

5. DaDaABC
Shola, the girl mentioned above who works for English Ninjas, also works for this company.
What’s your name?
I’m Shola.
Where are you from and where do you currently live?
I’m from the USA, and I’ve been living in Spain for 2 years now.
Why did you decide to teach online?
I was broke, y’all. The Auxiliares program pays enough to cover living expenses, but I wanted more dough to afford travel, etc. Teaching English online is simply the most convenient and easy way to earn money. I don’t spend any time or money to commute to work. I don’t have to plan lessons or manage a class of multiple students. I can spend more time alone at home (perfect for an introvert like me), earn money, and still maintain energy for being with friends.
How did you find out about the company?
I heard it through the grapevine.
Tell me a little bit about the hiring process. What would an interested candidate have to do? How rigorous is the hiring process?
I actually applied for DaDaABC and VIPkid simultaneously. DaDa was quick and painless compared to the rigorous process of VIPkid. First, a DaDa rep emailed me to schedule a Skype interview which lasted about 6 minutes and consisted of questions about my online teaching experience, where I lived, and technology requirements (computer, webcam, high speed internet, and headset with microphone). Next, after the Skype interview, I had a training with the same rep. It was online in the actual DaDa platform and only lasted about 15 minutes. The rep rapidly went through the slides of a presentation which explained how the platform functions. DaDa training is minimal to say the least. After the online training with the rep, I had a 30 minute mock class with a real child/student. After that mock class with a real student, my rep told me I could start real classes.
Are the lessons prepared for you or do you have to create them?
In DaDaABC, the lessons are in the platform. I see a video of me, a video of the student, and the presentation (called “courseware”). I don’t have to create anything. The student and I can both write and draw on the platform during activities. There is also a chat message box where we can write to each other during the lesson. I type notes there that are then visible while I complete the assessment after the class has ended. If you are an overachiever, you can preview the lessons before your classes and prepare any props you want to use. It’s okay if you don’t finish the lesson in one 30 minute class. The presentation will bookmark where you left off, so you can simply continue during your next session with that student. Also, there is freedom for teachers to be creative, play the guitar, sing, go off script, etc. I often spend about 5 minutes doing free conversation with some of my pre-teen students who can express themselves more in English.
Roughly how long did it take you to get students?
DaDa assigns students to the teachers. I simply gave my fixed working hours, then they assigned students. So, I automatically had weekly regular students. I also had several trial student calls during the first month. The regular classes last 30 minutes, and the trials are 14 minutes long.
What is the starting off pay?
DadaABC pays between $15-20 per hour depending on your experience and interview. You receive half pay when you’re online during your scheduled working hours and without a student call. When DaDa offered my 6 month contract, I requested more pay. They obliged as long as I committed to one year in lieu of 6 months. My advice is to ask for more pay than you are initially offered. The worst that can happen is “No.” You decide to accept or decline their offer of employment.
DaDa pays bonuses each time you complete 4 classes with the same student and when your trial students subscribe. There is also a reward system which allows you to accumulate points for various tasks and trade in those points for Amazon gift cards. You accumulate points when you assign homework to students and they complete it, when you log in on time to the platform for your contracted fixed work time, when you are on time for entering class sessions, etc.
DaDa pays once monthly to Paypal or bank on the 15th of the month in whichever currency your account holds, and they say to allow up to 5 business days from the 15th. (Chinese currency cannot leave China, so it must be converted to the currency you can receive in your account.) They paid me early for my first paycheck. It actually arrived to my bank account on the 13th of the month. My second paycheck arrived on the 16th of the month.
Are you required to work a specific amount of hours each week?
Yes. DaDaABC requires at least 2 working days per week with at least 2 hours per day. The 2 days can only be consecutive if they are on the weekend. You must provide a fixed schedule which will be in your contract. You must request a leave of absence at least 24 hours in advance to cancel.
Is there a peak time for teaching the most classes? If so, when is it?
Yes. Peak hours for DaDaABC are when the Chinese children are home from school: from Monday to Friday 6pm to 9pm GMT+8 and Saturday-Sunday 9am to 9pm GMT+8. There are no classes scheduled during Chinese holidays.
With DaDaABC, the work is easy (lesson prepared), enjoyable (use puppets, flashcards, songs), and meaningful (helping children). I can work from anywhere in the world, so it’s great for living abroad. Also, there is opportunity to work more hours in addition to my weekly fixed schedule. I control how much I work and, subsequently, earn.
What are the worst things?
The worst things with DaDaABC are the grammar and spelling errors in the lessons and the lack of English comprehension by the staff.
Is there anything else people should be aware of before applying?
The DaDa system only schedules 2 minutes in between classes. It’s important to consider this before you commit to many consecutive hours of work (which is possible on Saturdays and Sundays). Here’s a description of my work day to give you a better idea: My contracted hours are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 6-9:10pm (GMT+8). On some days, the entire 3 hours are booked with my regular students for consecutive 30 minute classes. Immediately after I end the class, the assessment appears. I must click the star ratings, bypass the actual assessment feedback box due to lack of time to complete at the moment, click the “assign later” radial for the homework section, then click “save for later.” After doing so, I usually have about 1 minute and some seconds to enter and begin the next class. After my contract time ends, at 9:10pm, I can go back and complete and submit all the assessments. Once you’re in the DaDa platform you will see the assessment template, etc. You must complete assessments within 24 hours in order to receive payment. The 14 minute trial classes have a much simpler assessment which doesn’t require any written comments. You simply click the radial options and click submit. It takes less than one minute to complete and must be completed immediately following the class.

What are the worst things?
Group class teachers must work a set minimum number of hours each week.
Is there anything else people should be aware of before applying?
Teaching online is not the same as teaching offline. Teachers must learn and grow in order to be successful online teachers.
51Talk teachers really impact their student’s lives by helping them access an affordable language education.
51Talk’s lesson platform needs a computer manufactured in 2013 or later to work properly.
Apply for online teaching jobs with 51 Talk here if you have a North American accent. Apparently there’s a different division if you’re at the native level but don’t have a North American accent. Carli said those candidates can e-mail here at thebarescoop@gmail.com and she can refer you.

7. SayABC
What’s your name?
Emily Jones
Where are you from and where do you currently live?
I’m from Warren, Pennsylvania, but I’m currently living in León, Spain as an auxiliar de conversación (English language assistant)
Why did you decide to teach online?
I decided to try online teaching over the summer to supplement my income. As a teaching assistant I only work from October to May, so I needed some sort of income to get me through the summer months.
Tell me about the company.
SayABC is a fun, interactive online teaching platform. Each class lasts for 40 minutes and will have between 1-4 students. SayABC’s content was designed by National Geographic and features stunning visuals, songs and games, video activities, and global values.
What age group do you teach? Are your students from a specific country?
The students are between 5-12 years old, and all students live in China.
How did you find out about the company?
I found out about SayABC while researching online companies. It’s featured on many websites and lists of online teaching companies, so there’s a lot of information available to potential teachers before they take the plunge and apply. SayABC was also mentioned in some Facebook groups for TEFL certified teachers.
Tell me a little bit about the hiring process. What would an interested candidate have to do? How rigorous is the hiring process?
The hiring process is pretty standard for online teaching companies. First the candidate fills out an application form listing all of their relevant qualifications and submits their CV. Successful candidates are asked to schedule an interview; in the interview you will answer basic questions about yourself and your teaching experience and perform a demo class of about fifteen minutes. The materials for the demo class are provided and you also have the opportunity to do a self-recorded interview if you prefer.
Once you pass the interview you will be asked to view some preparatory videos and schedule a mentoring session with an active SayABC teacher. They will answer any questions you have and can give you some great tips for your evaluation class. Next step is to teach an actual class of forty minutes, the evaluation class. You can schedule this yourself and the materials for class will be available to you so you can practice beforehand. Depending on your performance, you may be given a second chance to do the evaluation class. If you are successful after your first or second attempt, they will offer you a contract. This process can be overwhelming, but don’t stress, the company is expanding and needs to hire more teachers. They want you to succeed!
Are the lessons prepared for you or do you have to create them?
Yes, each lesson is prepared for you; the only thing you need to do is preview the lesson before class. Super easy!
Roughly how long did it take you to get students?
What’s great about SayABC is that they schedule the classes for you. You don’t need to worry about appealing to parents or fighting to get your profile noticed; you simply open up your availability and SayABC schedules classes to fit your availability. Many teachers get steady classes within a week or two of opening up their time slots; for others it may take a month or longer. This depends largely on the time of year and how many slots you have open. It’s best to open many at first so that you have a better chance of getting classes.
What is the starting off pay?
You earn 15 USD for every 40 minute class. The main classes SayABC offers are called homerooms; one unit of a homeroom is 9 classes, twice a week for 4.5 weeks. If you are present for every class in a unit you earn an additional $6 for each class, making the total per class 21 USD.
Are you required to work a specific amount of hours each week?
SayABC has no minimum hours requirement, so it’s very flexible.
Is there a peak time for teaching the most classes? If so, when is it?
Except for some morning classes on weekends, all classes are taught between 18:00-21:10 Beijing time. The most popular time slot is 19:40-20:20 Beijing time.
What are the best things about the company you work for?
My favorite things about SayABC are the flexibility and the fact that the company schedules the classes for you. Also if you can keep the same availability open for several weeks, then the classes are very steady. But don’t worry, SayABC offers trial classes which can be scheduled one week in advance. They also offer the opportunity to sub for other teachers; teachers earn $22 for each subbed class.
What are the worst things?
At the moment SayABC doesn’t have a vacation policy. You can ask for leave if you need to miss a class, but the company urges that you only do this in case of emergencies. If you know you need a week off you can leave that week blank in your schedule, but that may affect whether you get new bookings. However, SayABC is a relatively new company and is constantly making improvements. I’ve heard that a vacation policy could be in the works!
