I recently had a little escape to Malta. Part of my 6-day solo trip was treating myself to a bit of luxury. What better way to do that than at Gozo Island Luxury Hotel? After all, Gozo is a true escape from the busier main island of Malta.
Last month, I had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Duke Boutique Hotel in the city of Victoria on Gozo Island in Malta. So I thought I’d share some of the details with you all as I would highly recommend spending some time on the lovely island of Gozo if you make a trip to Malta.
Where is Malta?
If you’re asking this right now, do not feel ashamed for not knowing. This country is tiny. Furthermore, I’ve met Europeans who know little about it as well. Some assume that it’s apart of Italy since it’s so close to Sicily. However it’s an independent country and a member of the EU! Ryanair flies there from many European cities, so there really is not reason not to go to Malta!
Here’s where Gozo is. If you zoom out a bit, you’ll see that it’s next to the main island of Malta. If you zoom out even further, you’ll see that this beautiful country sits on the Mediterranean.
Getting to Gozo from Malta
Getting from Gozo to Malta will take some time unless you have your own car. I got a 7-day Malta transportation card that was good on any Malta or Gozo bus, so I took a bus out to the ferry. It was about an hour-long ride. If you want to take a day trip to Malta, prepare for that. All I know is that when I finally got to my hotel, I was so relieved that I chose to spend the night on Gozo. It was so nice to not have to rush back to the ferry.
The ferry is called Gozo Channel. This website keeps an up to date list of all the ferry times. A standard passenger fare is 4.65€. You’ll think that you accidentally rode it for free when you get off at first. However everyone pays a roundtrip fare when they head back to Malta from Gozo. I suppose they figure that everyone will have to come back at some point.
Once you get off the ferry, there are several bus lines to get you to different parts of the island.
The Gozo Island Hotel
The Duke Boutique Hotel is located in the perfect spot for exploring the island of Gozo. It’s in the heart of Gozo’s capital Victoria. You can easily catch lots of buses from the main bus terminal that’s just a short walk away from the hotel.
The hotel is located on the top two floors of a shopping center. Inside you’ll find a handful of shops, a grocery store and a restaurant. Since I just kind of vegged out the night I spent there, having a grocery store and a restaurant below me were perfect!
The room
I stayed in a garden view room. Next to the hotel, there’s an adorable little park that my room overlooked. I had a balcony with several chairs. Unfortunately, it started raining so I couldn’t really enjoy it.
I had quite a large and comfortable bed, a small mini bar, a tv, a desk area and lots of closet space. I utilized that space to hang up some of my dresses!
The bathroom was probably my favorite part. It had cool mirror lighting and all the things that I could have needed.
The breakfast
Each morning, they serve breakfast from 7-10 a.m. I was quite impressed with the selection. I always like fresh fruit for breakfast and they did not disappoint! I made myself a little plate of some eggs, sausage, bread and strawberries. And of course I had a coffee as well. That’s a must!
The view from the top
One of my favorite things about this Gozo Island luxury hotel was the view of the citadel. The citadel is this sort of old fortress that sits in the middle of the city. If you go out on the deck of the hotel, you have the most amazing view.
