Sometimes the worst travel fails make for the best stories afterwards. When the end of your travel fails includes a stay at a luxury Czech countryside hotel, it’s not really so bad in the end. Let me back up.
So back in June, Alex (blogger friend from East Coast Contessa) and I spent a night out in the Czech village of Karlstejn. An escape from the bustle of Prague was just the thing we needed. However the journey out there was filled with a few hilarious bumps along the way. After a train that went back to the Prague train station and bad Google Maps directions, we finally ended up at the romantic Hotel Mlyn Karlstejn. Yes, I went to a romantic hotel with my blogger bestie.
Getting to Karlstejn
So ideally, you would take the train from Prague to the village of Karlstejn. We made the mistake of following the Google Maps directions that had us on a dirt road. Instead you have to cross the train tracks and walk next to their zoo. When we got lost, their staff was more than helpful in getting us back on the right track!
Exploring the facilities
The best thing that this hotel offers you is an escape. The property has an amazing terrace and a lot of green space. It’s situated right next to a beautiful, bustling river.
This space can also be used for weddings and private parties. I imagine it would be a great place to get married!
The food
Meals should be no worry for you when staying out in Karlstejn. The hotel has a wonderful restaurant. We ate both lunch and dinner there on the day we checked in, and we had breakfast there the following day.
I think that this dish was my favorite. It’s a chicken with a pumpkin sauce. It was something a little different and I’m glad that I tried it.
Breakfast the next morning was buffet-style. They had eggs and of course beans (British-style).
The spacious room
While we only stayed one night, I feel like I could have stayed several because the room was so spacious. There was a section with a sort of couch and crib (perfect for families). We had a queen-sized bed that was also very comfortable.
The bathroom was also quite a treat. In addition to having all of the shampoo, conditioner and soap that we needed, we had a jacuzzi- style bathtub. If we had traveled there during winter, you know I would have enjoyed that jacuzzi at least once.
Around town
Another wonderful thing to do is wander around the town of Karlstejn. It’s only maybe a 10-minute walk from the hotel. There’s a castle you can explore (of course … there are castles everywhere in the Czech Republic) that overlooks the town.
I took a walk up there and shot some really good photos. However I did not enter the castle on principle. At this attraction, they charge foreigners more than Czech people. I really didn’t find that fair, so I didn’t want to give them my money.
Overall, Alex and I had a great time exploring Karlstejn and treating ourselves to a nice stay at a Czech countryside hotel. I would only advise people to be careful if walking to the hotel as the directions can be misleading. If you’re not passing animals in a zoo, you are going the wrong way!
Have you explored the countryside of the Czech Republic?
