Over a month ago, I spent a weekend in Alicante with several close friends of mine. What we were not aware of was that it was the same weekend as the Hogueras. What are the Hogueras? They are these huge displays that people in Alicante create each year. At the end of the weekend, they burn them all. It’s the same idea as Las Fallas in Valencia. Some of you might remember that I traveled there in 2017.
We were simply wanting a weekend away at the beach and in the sun. None of us had been to Alicante, so we figured why not make a weekend out of it and enjoy?
Travel logistics
The trip from Granada to Alicante is about 3 hours and 40 minutes by car. We were lucky to find a Blablacar that had three open spots. So we were all able to ride together! I prefer Blablacar when traveling because it’s often both quicker and cheaper than the bus or train.
Once we arrived in the city, we took the Metro out to our Airbnb. We chose to stay closer to the beach rather than in the city. With public transit easily-available, we never felt the need to be closer to the city. We stayed near Playa de San Juan.
Let’s go to the beach beach!
When spending a weekend in Alicante, you have to visit the beaches. They are beautiful. We spent almost one full day at the beach in San Juan.
My friend Karen figured out that she’s a beach girl on this trip. She looks super happy in this photo!
My travel buddies enjoying the beach.
We also look a little trip out to Camepello, a little beach town just outside of Alicante. After enjoying lunch in town, we wandered along the beach. The Baños de La Reina were super cool as well.
These were the Baños de La Reina. They’re basically like these pools and this rock formation in the water. Lot’s of people were swimming by them. We just dipped our feet in and of course took some photos.
The Hogueras in Alicante
Some of you may know about Las Fallas in Valencia. It’s basically this festival where people create this huge displays. At the end of the weekend, they burn them all! They set off fireworks and have a band play. The burning process is quite an ordeal.
Well since Alicante is part of the Valencia region, they have a very similar festival. The one in Alicante happens every June and we just happened to be there to see it!
The photos were taken with my phone. When I go to big events with a lot of people, I don’t like to take my nice camera.
These are women in traditional dress.
Selfie time!
If you notice in this photo, there’s a kid on the stoplight. Spain just cracks me up. Someone just let their kid climb up a stoplight in order to get a better view.
In Valenciano (the language spoken there in addition to Spanish), Hogueras are Fogueres.
There were only a few things that we didn’t get to do on this trip. The first one was really explore the old town or Barrio Viejo. The second one was visit the castle that overlooks the city. I also really wanted to take a day trip out to Tabarca Island. However it was amazing to see another rich Spanish tradition.
