Our story/Nuestra historia

(English) We met in August of 2019 on Tinder. Yes Tinder works for something like 5% of the population and I suppose we got lucky. Our first date was an afternoon coffee at a café called Faborit and ever since then, our relationship has happened quite naturally.

In March of 2020, the pandemic hit and it pushed us even closer together. We started living together because the idea of spending a confinement without each other simply didn’t sound enjoyable. Since 2019, we’ve traveled to many places together such as Menorca, Lanzarote, Porto and even the US to meet Nina’s family.

(español) Nos conocimos en agosto de 2019 en Tinder. Sí, Tinder funciona para más o menos el 5% de la población y sí, supongo que tuvimos suerte en eso. Nuestra primera cita fue un cafecito una tarde en una cafetería que se llama Faborit y desde allí nuestra relación empezó a formarse y crecer.

En Marzo de 2020, llegó el COVID pero sin embargo eso nos unió aún más. Empezamos a vivir juntos porque ninguno de los dos les gustó la idea de pasar la pandemia solo. Desde 2019, hemos viajado juntos a muchos sitios como Menora, Lanzarote, Porto y Estados Unidos para conocer a la familia de Nina y a tantos y tantos amigos comunes.

The proposal/Como pidió la mano

(English) It was a cold and rainy day in October in Northern Spain. Chuchi told Nina that he wanted her to come to his cross-country running race in a town near Burgos. Nina bundled up and brought her umbrella. Standing there completely drenched in the rain, she had no idea what was about to happen.

Chuchi finishes the race and Nina finds him at the finish line. He says “Well I don’t think I’m going to win this race today, but I have an even better present for you.” Nina was shocked and totally taken by surprise, but of course said yes!

(Spanish) Fue un día frío y lluvioso de octubre en el norte de España. Chuchi dijo a Nina que quería que le acompañara a un cross en un pueblo cerca de Burgos. Nina se puso ropa calentita y llevó su paraguas. Estaba lloviendo a cántaros y Nina no tenía ni idea de lo que le iba a pasar.

Chuchi terminó su carrera y Nina se reunió con él en la meta. Le dijo “Bueno no he ganado esta carrera, pero creo que tengo el mejor regalo del mundo.” Nina se quedó en shock y aunque sin duda fue un gran sorpresa, ¡por supuesto dijo que sí!

• Where/donde: La Huerta Vieja, Laguardia, Spain

(English) We recommend that out-of-town guests find accommodation in Logroño, the city where Chuchi and Nina live. With a population of 150,000, there is much more to do and it is easier to get to than Laguardia. We will be renting buses to take people to and from Logroño so people do not have to worry about driving out there.

We have reserved blocks of rooms at these two hotels:

• NH Logroño Herencia Rioja, a 4-star hotel offering us double rooms for 244€ for Friday and Saturday (it’s obligatory to reserve both nights if you want a room in our block). You can of course reserve additional nights, but the price might be a bit more per night. If you’d like to reserve a room here, send an e-mail to nhherenciarioja@nh-hotels.com saying that you are with our group. You can send the emails in English.
• Sercotel Portales, a 3-star hotel offering us double rooms for 120€ for Friday and Saturday. You also have the option to reserve more nights here, but the cost might be slightly different. They’ve asked us to have one person coordinate for our group, so if you’d like a room in this block, please send Nina an email at nbosken@gmail.com.

(Spanish) Recomendamos a los huéspedes de fuera de la ciudad que busquen alojamiento en Logroño, la ciudad donde viven Chuchi y Nina. Con una población de 150.000 habitantes, hay mucho más que hacer y es más fácil llegar que a Laguardia. Alquilaremos autobuses que lleven y traigan a la gente desde Logroño para que no tengan que preocuparse de conducir hasta allí.

Hemos reservado bloques de habitaciones en estos dos hoteles:

• NH Logroño Herencia Rioja, un hotel de 4 estrellas que nos ofrece habitaciones dobles por 244€ para el viernes y el sábado (es obligatorio reservar las dos noches si quieres una habitación en nuestro bloque). Por supuesto, puedes reservar noches adicionales, pero el precio podría ser un poco más caro por noche. About La Rioja and how to travel/sobre La Rioja y como viajar

(English) La Rioja is one of Spain’s 17 autonomos regions and it’s located in the Northern part of the country. It is about 3.5 hours from Madrid and 6 hours from Barcelona (the train makes the trip a bit faster though). With over 500 wineries, La Rioja is well known for wine. Here are a few recomendations of what to do and see:

• Calle Laurel, a street where you can order pinchos. If you know a bit about Spain, you have likely heard about tapas. Well pinchos are like the tapas of the North. People generally go from bar to bar on this street ordering pinchos. Each bar has it’s pincho that everyone goes there for.
• Visit a winery. Many wineries offer tours costing between 12-25€ per person (roughly). You will likely need to reserve in advance. These wineries are located in Logroño or are a quick bus ride or taxi away: Franco Españolas, Ontañon, Campo Viejo, Viña Ijalba and Arizcuren.
• The La Rioja Museum. It’s located in the center of the city and is free.
• Walk up to the top of Monte Cantabria. It has the most beautiful views of the city. It takes about 40-50 minutes to walk from the center.
• If you have time for a day trip, we recomend these towns: Haro (there are many more wineries here), Laguardia and Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

To travel here from the US, we recommend you look for flights into Madrid or Barcelona. Bilbao and Zaragoza both have airports closer by, but tend to have more flights within Spain and Europe. How to get to Logroño from:

• Madrid: There is a bus that takes you directly from the aiport to Logroño. Alsa is the company and make sure to search Madrid aiport-Logroño. If you plan to spend a night or two in Madrid before coming to Logroño, you can take a cheaper bus from the city center on Jimenez or a train with Renfe.
• Barcelona: You can take a bus or train, but the train is faster. Renfe is the train company in Spain. They usually offer between 1-3 trains from Barcelona to Logroño each day, but there are many moe and faster trains Barcelona-Zaragoza (Zaragoza is about 2 hours from Logroño). Then from Zaragoza, you can either take another train to Logroño or a bus on Jimenez. The bus station is in the same building as the train station, so it’s very easy to transfer. The bus might be the better option because sometimes the regional train has delays up to an hour and a half! The bus, however, is usually right on time. The other option is to take a bus from Barcelona to Logroño on Alsa, which takes around six hours.
• Bilbao: If you fly into another European city, you might find that it’s not too expensive to fly into Bilbao. From here, you will need to take the airport bus to the Bilbao Intermodal (bus station). You will see the bus out in front of the airport to the right (it’s not a very big airport) and you can buy the ticket on board with cash or at the booth inside with card we’re pretty sure. Then from the bus station, you will take an Alava bus to Logroño. It takes about 2 hours.

One thing to keep in mind when booking travel arrangements months in advance is that some companies don’t sell tickets that far in advance. Don’t worry or panic! Just book what you can and put a reminder in your calendar to check back in May or June.

(español) La Rioja es una de las 17 comunidades autónomas de España y está situada en el norte del país. Está a unas 3,5 horas de Madrid y a 6 horas de Barcelona (aunque el tren acelera un poco el viaje). Con más de 500 bodegas, La Rioja es conocida por sus vinos. Aquí tienes algunas recomendaciones sobre qué hacer y qué ver:

• Calle Laurel, una calle donde se pueden pedir pinchos. Si conoces un poco de España, seguro que has oído hablar de las tapas. Pues bien, los pinchos son como las tapas del norte. La gente suele ir de bar en bar por esta calle pidiendo pinchos. Cada bar tiene esta conocido por un pincho en particular.
• Visitar una bodega. Muchas bodegas ofrecen visitas guiadas que cuestan entre 12 y 25 € por persona (aproximadamente). Es probable que tenga que reservar con antelación. Estas bodegas se encuentran en Logroño o a un corto trayecto en autobús o taxi: Franco Españolas, Ontañon, Campo Viejo, Viña Ijalba y Arizcuren (puedes encontar los enlaces arriba en la parte que esta escrito en inglés)
• El Museo de La Rioja. Está situado en el centro de la ciudad y es gratuito.
• Camine hasta la cima del Monte Cantabria. Tiene las vistas más bonitas de la ciudad. Se tarda unos 40-50 minutos andando desde el centro.
• Si tienes tiempo para una excursión de un día, te recomendamos estas localidades: Haro (aquí hay muchas más bodegas), Laguardia y Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
