My new flat iron

I don’t know about you, but my hair has always been pretty easy to manage. All I’ve ever needed to do is wash and blow dry for a nice, straight look. Many of my friends are jealous.

Yet like everyone else, the grass is always greener on the other side. To be honest, I always go towards a more curly or wavy look for any sort of fancy occasion. Creating curls easily and on the fly is always something I struggle with. For years I’ve been a curling iron girl and only save it for times when I know I have a good 30 minutes to spend on my hair. Most mornings I have about 5-10.

Irresistible Me

Irresistible Me is a company focused on all things hair: hair styling tools, hair accessories and clip-in extensions. For the past several years, I’ve known that you can create curls and waves with a flat iron. I never knew about people did it. I envisioned wrapping the hair around the straightener much like you do with a curling iron. How dangerous … yikes!

Thanks to youtube, however, I found a few tutorials about how to achieve some flat iron curls. Now that I’ve gotten the hang out it, I do it all the time. I find it even easier than curling with a curling iron. Let me go ahead and walk you through the process.

The before hair

All I did to my hair that morning was wash and blow dry it. No products other than obviously shampoo and conditioner had been used.

The process

It really is so much simpler than you thought. You grab a strand of hair just like you’re straightening your hair. If you want to use a heat protector, that does not hurt. Here’s what I used for this session.

You simply start at the top of your strand, close to your head. Clamp down and turn your flat iron over or under. You can see here below how I’ve created that. Once you’ve got your turn, just run the hair on through! It takes so much less time than a curling iron!

My final look

My hair was so very long when these were shot! I got some amazing waves! However I think it can be difficult at times when you just have so much hair! Here’s the final look:

5 Highlights from la semana pasada

Happy Friday! I’m so glad we have made it to the end of the week! I think we all need to pat ourselves on the back. We have made it to the weekend!

A lot has been happening in my world. In a little over a week, I will host a little black dress party along with several other female small business owners. I’m about 85% excited and 15% worried about all the things. I plan to have an informational/interactive table and I’m currently stressing about how that will look. All will turn out okay, I’m sure. Anyway, here are 5 highlights from this past week.

5. My pineapple dress arrived

About a week ago on a whim, I decided to buy a pineapple dress off of Zulily. It’s exactly what you think it is … a dress with a pineapple on it. It arrived a few days ago and I’m so very excited. You’ll have to check it out for yourself here:

Stay tuned for an outfit post featuring this dress in a few weeks.

4. Mexican food with Una

Do you all remember Una from Tea with Una? If you’re new to following my blog, I often feature other women in their favorite dresses on here. First, because I’m really not all that interesting. And second, I love hearing the stories of other women. Una had some cute dresses for sure.

Last night we had a long and enjoyable dinner at Los Potrillos Mexican restaurant. I always end up accidentally speaking Spanish at Mexican restaurants. By that I mean that I never want to be “that person” who’s all like dusting off their shoulder as they say “hola, como estas?” to the waiter. However it usually comes out accidentally at some point throughout the meal and we end up making small talk in Spanish. Then they ONLY talk to me in Spanish the rest of the night. Ooops. Go figure.

3. My Irresistible Me flat iron

Over these next few weeks, I’ll collaborating with Irresistible Me, a company that makes hair extensions, flat irons, hair accessories and the like. My flat iron arrived and I’m so very excited! My hair is pretty naturally straight. However I love creating waves with a flat iron, so I plan to create that sort of look with this awesome hair styling tool. Stay tuned as I’ll be reviewing it in a few weeks.

2. The weather

The weather has been absolutely amazing. I have been loving all the warmth we’ve been having.

1. The Little Black Dress party

Next Sunday, June 26th, I’m hosting a little black dress party with several other amazing women. I simply cannot wait. I met up with Jena from Imbue on Tuesday to hash out all the loose ends. We also had a little photoshoot in her favorite LBD. The full post will appear Sunday. Here are a few teasers:

My Christmas re-cap

Christmas is over. Each year in my adult life, Christmas just seems to sneak up on me. Before I know it, it’s Christmas eve. This year things especially seemed to happen that way. Luckily, however, I had my trusty camera with me at several holiday events. Here’s my re-cap.

The Christmas Who-vile party

I’m a notorious friend-stealer. By that, I mean that many of my friendships have been made through mutual friends. Kim is one of said “stolen” friends. She and my best friend Kayleigh met at Wittenberg University when they were members of the same sorority. Then their first year out of undergrad, she moved down to Cincinnati to work on her master’s and we all hung out from time to time. After that, she found a job in Columbus.

Each year, her roommate Nichole has a fun and festive Christmas party. This year made party number nine. Nichole seems to be known for her Christmas party amongst her friends from high school, college, work and wherever else she knows her friends from. Kim invited me last year and I went. The theme was blue and they made these amazing candles.

This year the party took a Grinch theme and they made their own beer. These ladies really out-do themselves every year.

Also, her hair and costume here are simply amazing. Kim decided to dress as a Christmas present. I love her shoes! I just decided to pin my braids to the side of my head like Cindy Lou-who. If you have a Grinch party to go to, it’s like the easiest thing to do. Here are a few more photos from the evening:

Christmas day with the Boskens

Since I was born and probably even before that, my dad’s side of the family has been gathering together on Christmas day. This year, we all gathered at my aunt’s house. Highlights included a White Elephant gift exchange, a game of Settlers of Catan and Mostaccioli for dinner. I snapped a few photos of family members in dresses.

The baby shower

The day after Christmas, I got together with my dad’s side of the family at a different aunt’s house. One of my cousins is going to have a baby in a few weeks, so we had a shower. It was too fun.

Well, that’s a wrap! Now onto New Year’s!

L’BAE Hair, Makeup and Apparel

DSC_0214

Pamela Carter-Pitts is a woman of many talents. I met her several weeks ago at the Contemporary Dance Theatre’s fall Performance and Time Arts show. She directed a fashion show that was a part of the act (which you can read about on Not Your Mom’s PTA) and we struck up a conversation before the show began. This woman does a lot! Her business L’BAE, standing for Living Blessed and Empowered, provides hair and makeup services, has it’s own cosmetics line and it’s own apparel line. When she’s not working for herself through L’BAE, she can be found working as a sign language interpreter, playing wife to her husband or mom to her five children. Oh, and she also hosts a weekly radio show called Living Life the L’BAE Way on 1050 WGRI. I actually had the privilege of going on her show last Wednesday to talk about A World of Dresses.

Pamela and I at the radio station!

Pamela started her career as a cosmetologist in 1995. She started off working in various higher end salons, which was great to learn the business. However hair has always been a gift of her’s, so she was always able to build up a solid client base. She started getting deaf clients and thus decided to go back to school to become a sign language interpreter. She completed a bachelor’s program at Wright State and became nationally certified in 2010. Since then, she’s had many unique opportunities through interpreting. She’s had the privilege of working as an interpreter for Michelle and Barack Obama. She’s also worked with many government officials and gospel artists. Music, she said is her favorite. Thus, she ends up interpreting at all sorts of concerts.

“I love music and I love the stage,” she said.

In 2007, her daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Synovial Sarcoma that eats your organs. It swallowed her entire left kidney, so today she’s living with only her right one. However she’s cancer free and does not need dialysis. During this time, Pamela really sought out her Christian faith. That was where the idea of L’BAE, Living Blessed and Empowered, comes from. She said that during this time, she kept this sort of mantra with her. No matter what, she would get out of bed with the belief that she was blessed and empowered through her faith.

“I’m living blessed and empowered because despite the hardships that I’ve gone through and you don’t even know my story,” she said. “That is why I’m living blessed and empowered. My God gives me the joy to keep going despite what may be going on in my life.”

DSC_0207

Pamela looks at all of what she does as an art form. From a young age graduating high school from the School for Creative and Performing Arts, she has always loved performance. So makeup, hair and clothing design all go hand-in-hand with her creative side. In fact, her slogan with L’BAE is “Where the concept of art and beauty create a new you!”

For Pamela, L’BAE is more than just her business. It’s a lifestyle brand. She’s all about promoting positive self-esteem and feels like her business is her tool in empowering everyone she meets through it.

So in 2011, she began brainstorming and putting her business plan together. She started figuring out how she wanted the makeup to look, what she wanted the t-shirt designs to look like and all the other fun things that go along with creating your own business. Now she has her own space on the West side of Cincinnati where she sees clients by appointment. She can also be found going out to various events such as the one I met her at. In the summers, she travels around with L’BAE. Her cosmetics line was even endorsed by Reggie Wells, Oprah Winfrey’s former makeup artist.

Through L’BAE, she landed her radio show. Life is full of so many chance encounters that lead to amazing things. This was one of them. She was at a gospel concert and ran into one of the producers at 1050 WGRI. He had heard about L’BAE and was asking her all about it. The concept was one he found intriguing. Through several interactions, she read to him some of her poems and writings she had that inspired L’BAE. She didn’t think much of it, though. Then a few weeks later, he asked her to come read them on the station. This is how L’BAE Moments came about, a short two-minute radio segment with Pamela saying different inspirational things. From this, the radio show was born just about two months ago. It has blown up, she said.

Overall, Pamela seems to have a sense of joy and gratitude. She feels blessed with all of her successes.

“I love being my own boss and entrepreneur to where I dictate what happens in my own profession,” she said. “I love that. It feels really good.”
