Segovia, Spain has been on my list for quite some time now. I think this is the year that I’m really going to start checking off all those cute towns and cities in Spain I still have yet to visit. Segovia, with it’s amazing Roman aqueduct, was one that I recently checked off.

After working at a rather intense English summer camp for the month of July, I decided to treat myself to a little bit of solo traveling. The camp flew us into Madrid, so I figured I would spend some time exploring some towns and cities near Madrid before heading back to Granada for the month of August.

My stay at the Hotel Real, Segovia

hotel real segovia

I recently decided to splurge and stayed in a 4-star hotel. Those of you who read my blog regularly know that I stay in hostels a lot of the time. As an English teacher, hostels are always in my budget and mean that I can spend the extra money on more exhibits or drinks. However this past week, I decided to splurge and stay at the Hotel Real Segovia.

Okay so splurge … for me this meant 55 euros. How did I find that price? On hotels.com of course! The summer camp I had worked for in July flew me back to Madrid. Since I have already been to Madrid several times, I decided to explore a few places nearby. I had seen many amazing photos of the town of Segovia, Spain, so I decided to spend a night there. After looking through several hotels, I decided that Hotel Real Segovia looked like a nice place to stay. I also deserved to treat myself a bit after a month of hard work.

Several weekends ago, I traveled to Alicante with a few friends. Alicante is a city in the Valencia community in Spain. It’s on the coast, so it naturally attracts a lot of people in the summer.

When we arrived, we arrived in the afternoon. We hit up the beach just at sunset, which made for some great photos. I love going to the beach as it’s a great excuse to wear my pineapple dress. This dress is one of my favorite beach dresses.

A quick trip to Madrid

quick trip to Madrid

Last weekend, I took a quick trip to Madrid.

This summer is looking a tad different for me. Last summer, I was in the Czech Republic and exploring countries such as Hugary and Germany. This summer, I’ve decided to stay in Spain and work a little bit. I’m working for an English summer camp in the Pyrenees Mountains and Palma de Mallorca. I had to meet my coworkers in Madrid last Saturday, so I decided to make an evening of it.

Arrival in Madrid

Traveling from Granada to Madrid is pretty easy to do. As I’ve mentioned before on the blog, I prefer to travel with Blablacar. I found a Blablacar that left at 10 a.m., which put me into Madrid in the mid-afternoon. I took the Metro to my hostel, which was very easy to navigate.

Your guide to Granada’s arab baths

Granada's arab baths

One of my favorite things to do in Granada is just relax. In addition to the beautiful history, free tapas and amazing wine, there are several great spots to go to simply recharge your batteries. They’re called hammams and are basically different pools and saunas. You can also get a massage while there too. Granada’s arab baths are an experience you don’t want to miss out on.

In Granada, there’s one big hammam that is the most famous. However what many people don’t know is that it’s one of several places you can go. They all have different prices, so you can opt for a less expensive one if you’re on a budget. Being who I am, this blog was was an excuse to try them all out myself. So slowly but surely, I went to all the different arab baths in Granada. So here we go.

Understanding the outsider and my life as the foreigner

life as the foreigner

Life is such an amazing and beautiful journey. The older we get, the less we realize we know. I’ve been processing a lot what it means to be the foreigner … the outsider. Before I moved abroad to Spain, I envisioned eating good food, drinking good wine, traveling and meeting wonderful people. All of those things have definitely happened. In fact, I’d say a good 80-90% of my time is just that. However what I wasn’t expecting was feeling like the outsider from time to time. The other. The one who is different and calls attention because she’s not like the rest.

Of course I figured it would happen a bit since I’m not from Spain. But what I wasn’t expecting was that I would feel identified as country or nationality first more than just a few times. Everything in this world has a purpose and I believe all experiences can be used for good. More than anything, this has really taught me a lot about the world and the experience of others who are in this role of the other. This experience of being the other will help me to be more compassionate towards others who are different. I would like to take you on my journey of how I arrived here.

My weekend in Granada’s Alpujarras

weekend in Granada's Alpujarras

The city of Granada is full of rich history and culture. However Granada is also one of the eight provinces of the Andalucía region. There are so many things to explore in the region as well. One of them are the Alpujarra Mountains. A few weeks ago, I decided to spend some solo time and took a weekend in Granada’s Alpujarras.

Solo time as an expat

I am one of the biggest extroverts. However I’ve never needed more alone time than I have during my time overseas. Between communicating in my second language a lot and processing differences in cultures, I find myself needing time to me to just journal and reflect. So the intention of this trip was to just go and be.

What a load of bull: bullfighting in Spain

bullfighting in Spain

This is a guest post written by Fiona from profefiona.com. Like me, she’s an English-speaking expat living in Granada. She, however, comes from the UK. She writes about her experience with bullfighting in Spain.

A lot has been said and written about the controversial tradition of bullfighting in Spain.

What I want to tell you is my experience. I’m not going to tell you what you should or shouldn’t think.

My perfect London weekend

London weekend

There are some places that I feel like I’ll end up visiting a least 20 times. London is one of those cities. With flights for 60 euros roundtrip from Malaga, we figured why not a London weekend? The trip ended up being absolutely perfect.

The flights and transportation

So as some of you already know, I live in Granada. While Granada does have an airport, it’s small and there are often better deals from Malaga. Malaga is only an hour and a half drive from Granada. Furthermore there are lots of Blablacars and buses that go back and forth. I typically try to find a Blablacar going directly to the airport as it’s cheaper and quicker. However if I cannot find one, there’s an Alsa bus that goes directly from the Granada bus station to the Malaga airport. We opted for the bus this time, which cost around 25 euros roundtrip.
