Food in Prague: What You Have to Try

Traveling to a new place can feel overwhelming. You only have a few days to soak up as much as you can. For me, the food aspect can be daunting. How can I eat all the food in Prague in just a few days? Where do I even start? Which restaurants are worth my time and which ones are better to be skipped?

This is where Eating Europe comes in! They take all the leg work out of having an absolutely amazing culinary experience in Prague. This past fall when Alex from East Coast Contessa and I spent a few days in Prague, we were graciously invited to experience one of their food tours.

First, some gingerbread cookies

Our first stop was Perníčkův sen, an adorable little gingerbread cookie shop. They had so many fun treats to try. I’ll admit that I was a tad apprehensive since I’m allergic to peanuts. While I know that gingerbread cookies are typically peanut free, bakeries worry me because of potential cross-contamination.

However much to my surprise, they told me that they don’t make anything with peanuts. There wasn’t even a peanut in the house! They do use other nuts, though. Since I’m only allergic to peanuts, I was able to enjoy their treats that had other nuts such as walnuts and pecans!

This gingerbread shop is quite well-known in Prague, so you should definitely stop by!

Next … open face sandwiches … and meat!

After starting out with something sweet, I was ready for something savory. Luckily our tour guide took us to just the spot to try some open-faced sandwiches! Basically these things are like sandwiches who lost their top piece of bread!

Also did you know that the most-eaten meat in Prague is pork? Well now you do!

Little bits of culture

One of my favorite things about going on tours like these are talking with locals. Oftentimes, the tour guides can give you insight to cultural things as you walk from place to place. These adorable little toys were a perfect example.

These little blow-up animals were a part of childhood for anyone who grew up in the former Czechoslovakia in the 1970’s. They were created by Libuše Niklová. You can read all about the history of these animals and even buy them if you want here.

Here are a few other classic/iconic places that we stopped along our tour.

Some tapas … in Prague?

Spain isn’t the only country who does tapas! Apparently they’re a thing in Prague as well. After enjoying our open-face sandwiches, we stopped in for a bite before having our full meal.

A meal in Cafe Lourve

After all the stops we made, I wasn’t sure if I could finish a full lunch! We were brought to a place called Cafe Lourve. This is a classic Czech restaurant with lots of history. This restaurant has been in business since 1902! It really has lived through a lot of Czech history!

This is a classic Czech dish called Svíčková na smetaně. It basically consists of a sirloin steak marinated overnight with vegetables. It’s served with this amazing sauce and bread dumplings. I of course enjoyed it with a beer because drinking beer is what you do when in the Czech Republic.

And we end with ice cream

After our very traditional Czech lunch, we were taken over to Crème de la Crème. The owner of this place that claims to serve the best gelato in Prague spent many years working in Italy. Basically, he learned from some of the best and brought it back to Prague.

This ice cream was literally to die for. Our tour guide recommended that we get a scoop of the walnut ice cream and a scoop of strawberry. Simply heavenly.

These two scoops of ice cream also remind me to not let my fears get in the way of enjoying my travels. So as I mentioned above, I’m deathly allergic to peanuts. Often when traveling, I avoid all nuts just to be safe even though I am not in anyway allergic to other nuts. However on this tour, I told myself to enjoy all the food I could eat and not let my anxious thoughts get the better of me. I’m so glad that I did! Do you have anything that gives you anxiety while traveling?

Overall, we had quite the full day. This was definitely the kind of food tour that leaves you full and happy. What food in Prague are you wanting to try?
