Segovia, Spain has been on my list for quite some time now. I think this is the year that I’m really going to start checking off all those cute towns and cities in Spain I still have yet to visit. Segovia, with it’s amazing Roman aqueduct, was one that I recently checked off.

After working at a rather intense English summer camp for the month of July, I decided to treat myself to a little bit of solo traveling. The camp flew us into Madrid, so I figured I would spend some time exploring some towns and cities near Madrid before heading back to Granada for the month of August.

Where I stayed

I stayed at the Hotel Real, which was right in the center of the city. If you’re looking for a comfortable yet affordable hotel in Segovia, I definitely recommend it. You can read all about my experience there here.

Now onto the list …

5 things to do in Segovia, Spain

1. Visit and walk along the aqueduct

This is probably the most iconic Segovia thing and what I first checked off my list. I arrived to my hotel around 6 or 7 p.m., so I thought it would be cool to see the aqueduct just as the sun was going down.

This old Roman bridge dates back to the first century. There are a total of 166 stone arches. If you have the time, walk it’s entire length. It’s cool to see where it starts out to where it ends.

2. Visit the Alcázar

Just like Sevilla and Córdoba, Segovia also has an Alcázar.

It was initially built as a fort during Roman times. You can actually see a mote when you cross the bridge to enter. I remember thinking “wow, I’m about to enter a real castle!” when I was looking at it and taking photos.

Over the years it had been used for royalty and also as a prison for royalty. I climbed the tour and saw where the prison was.

I think one of the most fun facts about the Alcázar in Segovia is that it was used for the film Camelot. Also Walt Disney himself apparently drew inspiration from the Alcázar in Segovia.

The entrance to the Alcázar was 8 euros total to see both the tower and the castle. Separately I believe one was 5.50 and one was 2.50. There are guided tours in Spanish that cost an extra 2 euros.

3. The cathedral

One of the things you have to do in Segovia, Spain is visit the cathedral! It’s no secret that Spain is full of cathedrals. In fact, almost every town and city has one and they’re all quite iconic. I really loved the architecture inside. You can also go on a guided town and go up in the tower. That probably offers some of the best views of Segovia (other than the rooftop of my hotel of course).

According to their website, it was the tallest building in Spain for a long time. It stands around 288,714 ft tall. It cost 7 euros to tour the castle and have the guided tour of the tower.

And of course the view from the top was stunning.

I also captured this photo of the cathedral at night. It was amazing to see all lit-up.

4. Enjoy Segovian food in Plaza Mayor

One thing that my Spanish home of Granada lacks is a plaza mayor. We do have a lot of great plazas, just not one like the plaza mayores I’ve seen in Salamanca, Madrid or Segovia. Perhaps they’re more of a thing in the North of Spain?

I spent one night in Segovia and I was hungry. After reading an article from Devour Spain, I knew that there were two big dishes I wanted to try: the suckling pig and judiones de la granja. I also knew that I was no longer in Granada, so a dinner of free tapas was no longer an option.

I ended up eating at Restaurante El Tartare. My waiter was incredibly friendly and helpful, which honestly can be rare to find in Spain. Pictured below are judiones de la granja, a sort of soup with beans and meat. It was delicious and around 10 euros. While I also wanted to try the suckling pig, it was usually around 17-22 euros. That just wasn’t in the budget for me. However if you go with friends, I’m sure you could just split the price.

This was the view from my table. It was pretty great.

5. Explore the Jewish Quarter and streets of the city

Did you know that Segovia has a ridiculous amount of churches for such a small city? Most of them are not open to the public, but you can see them from the outside and admire the architecture.

Segovia also has an old Jewish Quarter with narrow streets and old, stone buildings. One of the best things to do in Segovia, Spain is just get lost.

Whether you want a small weekend trip or a day trip from Madrid, Segovia is a great place to visit.

Another great day trip from Madrid that I recommend is Toledo. Like Segovia, it is also about an hour outside of the city and full of rich history.

Love it? Pin it!
